Grandpa learned his trade in the Merchant Marine. During World War II, he worked as a marine electrician on supply ships in the south Pacific. Once back on dry land, he joined union local 6 of the IBEW in San Francisco and spent the rest of his working life there, installing power and lighting on large commercial projects. Dad joined local 6 as well. His first job as an apprentice was with Brumfield Neon Sign Company. Because of his work ethic, he later established himself as one of the youngest foreman at Abbott Electric. After moving to Sonoma, he hung out his own shingle in 1974, officially retiring in 2026. I grew up in the trade; I even recall pulling wire at the age of 6. I worked for Northern Lights Electric and others on an off for many years before finally settling into full time employment in 2010, after returning to Sonoma with my growing family.
